Simple Tips To Improve Quality Of Life For People With Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can impact a person’s quality of life. Medical treatments are a possible solution for the condition but maintaining the right lifestyle can make life easier for people suffering from such disorders.

Maintaining A Healthy Lifestyle With MS

Healthy life choices should be taken by everyone, but they are more important for people with conditions like MS. Lifestyle change isn’t an alternative for treatment, but it can make relapses and symptoms easier to control. Small changes can have a huge impact on the lifestyle and make it better.

People who have MS struggle to control their mood and mental health. Taking mental health as seriously as physical health can enhance the quality of life for people suffering from MS. The following psychotherapy approaches can be fruitful:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Emphasizes recognizing and changing problems causing thoughts and behavior patterns.

Mindfulness-Based Interventions

Focuses on purpose: living in the moment and welcoming thoughts without judgment.

Treatment and medication suggested for a mental disorder are the same as what is recommended for the general population.

Managing Stress

Stress can easily affect people with MS. However; more research needs to be done into the effects of stress on MS symptoms. Stress management techniques include deep breathing. People suffering from MS can also learn yoga, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery to let go of stress.

Seek Help

Asking for help is hard, but it can make things easier. Turn to people who might have been in the same situation as you to learn how they lived through it. You can also talk to your friends, family, mental health professionals, neighbors, support groups, MS organizations, and health care providers. When you finally decide to seek help, make sure to be open about your needs, be specific about what you want and go ahead and ask without waiting on the person to offer.

Get Proper Rest

Many people who suffer from MS have trouble sleeping, which affects their performance during the day. Talk to your doctor about this problem. It may be a possible sleep disorder that’s affecting your sleep.

Research has revealed that exercise can have positive effects on people suffering from MS. Exercises such as aerobics, exergaming, and strength training can improve health, positively impact mood, strength, balance, and mental functioning, and reduce fatigue, along with providing many other benefits to people suffering from MS. While exercising, make sure to stay hydrated and prevent overheating. Overheating can cause minor symptoms of MS, such as tingling, numbness, and blurred vision.

Have Fun

People who have MS prioritize self-care activities over social and leisure activities, which negatively affects their life. However, having fun is also important, so don’t be hesitant about going out or spending time with friends and family.
