Why Gene Simmons Wants Celebrities to “Shut the f**k Up” About Politics

Gene Simmons has never been shy about speaking his mind. The bassist and co-founder of KISS built a career on loud guitars, bold makeup, and even louder opinions. Now he is turning that blunt energy toward fellow celebrities who step into political debates.

In a recent interview with TMZ, the 76-year-old bassist made his position crystal clear. He believes entertainers should stop lecturing the public about politics and focus on their craft. His message came out exactly as expected, sharp, sarcastic, and impossible to ignore.

The Ben Stiller Moment That Sparked It

The conversation started with actor Ben Stiller. Stiller recently criticized the White House after officials used a clip from his 2008 comedy “Tropic Thunder” in a social media video related to U.S. military action in Iran. The actor posted on X and demanded the clip be removed, saying the administration had no permission to use it.

Stiller also made his position on the issue clear. He said he did not want his work connected to what he described as a propaganda effort and stressed that war is not entertainment. The post quickly spread across social media and sparked debate about celebrities entering serious political discussions.

TMZ asked Simmons for his reaction. The rock star did not hold back, delivering a sarcastic answer that instantly grabbed headlines. He joked that the public should obviously listen to actors and comedians because they are “so qualified” to discuss world politics.

The sarcasm set the tone for everything that followed. Simmons quickly shifted from playful mockery to a blunt message aimed at the entire entertainment industry.

“Do Your Art and Shut Up,” Simmons Says

Simmons / IG / Simmons made his main argument in direct language that left little room for interpretation. He told TMZ that celebrities should simply “shut the f**k up” about politics and return to doing what they do best.

According to him, audiences care about music, movies, and comedy, not the political opinions of wealthy entertainers.

The rock icon also questioned the assumption that fame equals expertise. In his view, performing on stage or starring in a blockbuster does not magically turn someone into an authority on foreign policy or national security. Simmons argued that entertainers often speak far outside their knowledge.

The KISS frontman also framed the issue as a matter of class and connection. He said many celebrities live in huge homes, drive luxury cars, and move through circles far removed from everyday life. That distance, he believes, makes their lectures feel out of touch to regular Americans who work long hours and pay rising bills.

Simmons insisted that people are not looking for moral guidance from Hollywood. In his words, most fans simply want to enjoy a great song like “Rock and Roll All Nite” or watch a movie without being told how to vote.

Calls Out Mark Ruffalo and Celebrity Activism

Simmons / IG / People might as well ask Kylie Jenner to explain international relations, Simmons said sarcastically.

Simmons did not limit his comments to Stiller. During the interview, he also mentioned actor Mark Ruffalo, who has frequently spoken out on political issues, including criticizing former president Donald Trump and expressing concerns about U.S. military policy.

Ruffalo has encouraged fans to contact lawmakers and oppose certain policies. He even supported a “State of the Union counterprotest,” using his large online following to push for political action. That kind of activism is exactly what Simmons says he finds frustrating.

In the TMZ interview, Simmons dismissed the actor’s opinions with open sarcasm. He jokingly called him “Mark Ruffalo Buffalo” and said he simply does not care what he thinks about global conflicts or American politics.

To drive the point home, Simmons compared celebrity political commentary to asking reality TV stars for policy advice. He joked that people might as well ask Kylie Jenner to explain international relations.
